INTERNATIONAL  JOINT MASTER DEGREE IN PLANT MEDICINE

INFORMATION

The project proposal follows the overall objectives to contribute to institution building in Higher Education (HE) at a Regional level, to sustain University networking partnerships, to enhance mutual understanding between the academic worlds of the Western Balkan countries and members of the EU, i.e. Bulgaria, Greece and Italy.

The project proposal is aligned with European Commission priorities on the central role of HE in developing a European cultural dimension, which is universally acknowledged as paramount to the development and reinforcement of stable, peaceful and democratic societies.

The project proposal is based on the modernisation and harmonisation of HE systems according to the Lisbon Strategy and the Bologna process.

The first specific objective is the design and development of the International joint Master degree in Plant Medicine (IPM) in the curricula of the Faculties of Agriculture at the Universities of Tirana and Korce (Albania), (Bosnia Herzegovina), and Zagreb (Croatia), Pristhina (Kosovo), Skopje and Tetovo (Macedonia), Podgorica (Montenegro), Belgrade and Novi Sad (Serbia), and will receive the support and the integration of the Universities of Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Athens (Greece), Bari (Italy), and of the Phytopathological Institute of Benaki (Greece).

During the three-year long life cycle of the project the members of the consortium will create a strong partnership in order to build an educational network between EU and Western Balkan Universities aimed at the international recognition of the degree, at meeting the needs of the territory in terms of compentence and employment for public and entrepreneurial system in the market labour of phytosanitary scope, at allowing admittance to further educational programmes even in foreign countries.

The second specific objective is the improvement and modernisation of traditional teaching contexts by applying new web technologies (internet-learning). This will assure multiple benefits such as: reduce the need for teachers for each site, reduce physical spaces and resources for classrooms and instrumentation in each site, and spread knowledge efficiently

Tempus finances two types of actions:

  1. Joint Projects are based on multilateral partnerships between higher education institutions in the EU and the partner countries. They can develop, modernise and disseminate new curricula, teaching methods or materials, boost a quality assurance culture, and modernise the management and governance of higher education institutions.
  2. Structural Measures contribute to the development and reform of higher education institutions and systems in partner countries, to enhance their quality and relevance, and increase their convergence with EU developments.

Partnerships are made up of consortia of organisations including higher education institutions, businesses, ministries, NGOs, and other organisations working in higher education; both from the EU and partner countries.

Launch of Tempus IV

The latest phase of the programme, Tempus IV, started in 2008 with a call for proposals lasting from January to April. The total budget for this call was around €51 million, with individual projects able to gaining funding of between €0.5 and €1.5 million. New projects under this call start at the end of 2008.

It is financed through three of the European Commission's external assistance instruments: the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance (Western Balkans); the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (Eastern Europe, North Africa and the Middle East); and the Development and Cooperation Instrument (Central Asia).
