"Fan S. Noli" University

“Fan S. Noli” University of Korce town, this educational, qualification and scientific research center of the region, nowadays has become 37-year history  of its outstanding activity in all fields.

          Since its creation and up to currently, the University has shown its powerful performance for the establishment and the consolidation of the academic capacity, has set forth visions and ambitious higher education programmes, and has applied active methods for training scholars and especialists in many important fields and sectors of economy, agriculture, education and medicine, harmonizing the students theoretical  formation with the professional and experimental practice and training, and the laboratory work and research.

          The first steps of the higher education in the region of Korce were laid since 1968-1971, when the Tirana University Filials were opened and began to function, such as: The Pedagogical Filial with its branches: Language & Literature, History and Geography, Biology & Chemistry, Maths & Physics. Later some new branches of this Filial were opened such as: Economy and Accounting.except these branches there were opened those that had to do with Mechanical Engineering  and Construction.

          There were about 3 000 students that attended these branches; there were 1619 students in pedagogical branch, 1093 in Economics and 340 Engineering branches.

          In 1971,  on June 15, year which refered to the estabishment of our institution, it had to do with Higher Agricultural Institute, with well-prepared programmes and with a full-time length of study together with the activities of the part-time models of the filial.Later these two institutions, that is, the Filial and the Higher Agricultural Institute, unified in management and in administration, establishing a very important institution not only for the region, but for the whole country.

For a period of about 20 years('71-'91) through evolution of this institution, the staff worked out actively for recognizing and consolidating the academic capacity, there were elaborated new visions and ambicious programmes and new active methods for training higher graduated experts in the field of agriculture and in other fields, harmonizing the academic formation with the lab experiments and the professional and experimental practice.

During the two decades there passed more than 2300 students, out of which 1700 gave their contribution as farming specialists throughout Albania, in the most difficult sectors of production and research work institutions.

The period 1992 until presently an entire organization from the conceptual and structural view point, and a whole reformation and modernization of this institution is taking place, under the democratic deep changes that happened in Albania, according to the legal statute of the up-to-date university.

Our university inherited the achievements and the best experience of the Albanian National Education, such as the intensive work and full of passion of the whole generations of the students and of the pedagogues, who cultivated the academic values and laid the secure foundations in teaching and research work.

Based on the decision Nr. 5, dated January 7-th, 1992, of the Council of Ministers, the University of Korce started its own activity, which in 1994 received the name “Fan S. Noli” University.

There were three different faculties at the beginning of its activity: The Faculty of Agriculture, The Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Economy; they had their own departments and appropriate branches.

In the year 1995 a new branch was attached to the University., it was the branch of nursing.

During that period the university was increased and enlarged with new branches, staff and students. Today the university issues 15 different diplomas covering 15 different study programmes.

Four different diplomas are isued by the Faculty of Economy.

Three different diplomas are issued by the Faculty of Agriculture.

Actually, there are about 4000 students attending our university, 20% of which are part-time system.

The academic staff consists of 90 full-time lecturers, professors and assistents and of about 135 part-time  ones. There are also 63 employees in administration and in labs as labs assistants.

Out of the whole staff of academics 33% of the full-time and 20% of the part-time have postgraduate titles and degrees. The mojority are young people, about 35 in number who have attended post university qualifications in Albania and abroad.

Today, there are four full-time professors, 16 associated professors and five doctors of science and art. A considerable number of the pedagogues are on the way of obtaining the doctorate studies, and they will raise the qualification of the full-time academic staff of our university.

There are also 4 part time profesors, three asociated professors and eleven doctors of sciences and art and a number of pedagogues that are on the process of their further qualification for “Master”, etc. 

The demand of the young people for admission to our university are increasing every passing year. This makes us increase the number of the new students and fulfill their demands. During the last years , we have registered about 1000 new students each year, while the demand has been greater, especially for the new branches and faculties that enable the students’ opportunity for new jobs, and further qualification in the highest possible levels.
